Are You Looking For A Rewarding Career In Childcare?

Becoming a child minder gives you the opportunity to a incredibly rewarding and responsible career with all the benefits of home-based working.

If you are already looking after your own children, becoming a child minder is a reasonably straightforward way to boost the household finances. Your daily routine is not likely to change too much, running costs are low and, once you are recruited, the income should be reliable and steady.

Home based childcare could be the ideal career for you. be your own boss, choose your own hours. There is no daily 9-5 grind and you can choose to be just a holiday nanny if that suits you !!

There are many points you need to consider before becoming a child minder. First and foremost you will need to be registered as a childcare provider.

Registering As A Child Minder

Anyone caring for children on their own premises, or other premises. Will need to be registered as a child minder with Ofsted. Failure to do so can result in a substantial fine, imprisonment or both.

You can apply to Ofsted for registration here. Once you have submitted your application Ofsted will contact you to further discuss your application.

Ofsted will discuss with you how you intend to offer childcare services, they will inspect the premises you intend to provide a childcare setting, this is to ensure a safe and suitable environment for young children.

You will also need to complete a medical record form, to ensure that you are physically and mentally fit to be registered as a child minder.

The childcare provider and anyone over the age of 16 on the premises will need to have a Criminal Records Check.

You will be required to provide names and addresses of two referees these references can not be provided by family members or parents proposing to place children in your care.

Childcare Qualifications And Training.

You are not required by law to have any formal qualifications, however you will need to take a First Aid Course and a Introduction To Child Minding. You will need to update your first aid course every 3 years.

Studying for childcare qualifications doesn’t have to be full-time. The internet has opened up thousands of opportunities for distance learning, which is an increasingly popular study option for many. For instance nvq childcare courses give you the opportunity to train on the job, and receive training for further qualifications, such as NVQ Level 3 or a BTEC.

You do need to bear in mind that perspective parents would be further enthusiast to leave their children to a person that has a good understanding of the care needed for their children.

Child Minding Skills And Attributes

The Child Minding National Standards Agency does expect a child minder to possess certain skills and attributes such as:

  •  Understanding and nurturing of child’s development
  • Providing physical care and development.
  • A genuine liking for working with children.
  • Understanding and managing child behaviour.
  • Knowledge and understanding of child development.
  • Administration and observation skills.
  • An understanding of equal opportunities and safeguarding children.
  • You need to be aged 18 or over to care for children.

If you are working Freelance or Self Employed you will need to register with Her majesty Revenue And Customs. Dont worry though it is not as scary as it might seem, and you will gain many benefits registering as self employed.

1. Forms and Guidelines
To register as Self Employed you will need to either ring HMRC on 08459 15 45 15 or download and send back form found here  http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/cwf1.pdf

You might also be required to pay National Insurance at the rate of £2.30 a week, but only if you earn more than £5,075 after expenses in any one year through Self Employment.

If you think you will earn less than £5,075 in a year, then you will need a “Certificate of Small Earnings Exception” which can be found here  http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/cf10.pdf

What a surprise !!HMRC  seem to have very long delays on processing these forms, so don’t worry if you do not hear back straight away, I personally find it easier to ring them !!

Information on Self Assessment – http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa/selfemp.ht

Working out how much tax you’ll have to pay
You will be taxed at your normal tax rates for self employment.

If your total income is less than £6,035, you’ll pay no tax.
If your total income is more than this, the next £36,000 will be taxed at 20%.
Any earnings higher than £42,035 will be taxed at 40%.

For some people Freelance Work is done in addition to their full time job. If the full time job pays between £6,035 and £42,035 then your income will most probably be taxed at 20%.

“Tax doesn’t have to be taxing”
Many people are put off Freelance Work  because of the tax registration work involved – but they needn’t be. Tax is actually quite easy once your learn how.

Record keeping
Keeping records is something that’s vital for your tax return information at the end of the year. Record keeping can prove invaluable when you come to do your expenses against your tax at the end of the year. It’s worth investing some time and effort.

Working out your profit/loss
Below is a little example of how to do this for each job, with some suggestions of what you could include for each job you do:

Income (includes all fees and reimbursements): £30.00
Expenses:
Job specific costs (anything you had to pay out to complete the work) (£20.00)
10 miles @ 40p (£ 4.00)
12 pages printed @ 6p (£ 0.72)
Profit (income less expenses) £ 5.2

It is up to your responsibility to work out how much you have actually ‘earned’, and how much you have legitimately spent on expenses.

What expenses can I claim against my income?

  • Paper & printer ink
  • Postage
  • Files, dividers, folders etc
  • Mileage costs
  • Broadband
  • Telephone

As I have mentioned before I have my fingers in a few pies and this is where I earn my income. Its fun free and easy !!

1. Market Research- Paid Surveys

Paid Surveys is a great way to earn some fast cash. You get to try and test new and upcoming products and get paid for it !! Surveys usually range from 5 minutes to 30 minutes and the pay is reflected in the time spent completing them.

2. Market Research – Mystery Shopping – Freelance Work

This is a excellent way to earn money from home (you will need to register as self employed) Mystery shopping is great fun you actually get paid to shop !! Basically you will be given assignments in which you will work undercover, you need to be objective in your role. In some cases you will work in auditing, or with a secret microphone or camera !!

3. Freelance Writing – Blogging

Blogging is an excellent way to earn some money from home. Write about whatever your interests are and subjects you are passionate about. You can submit your blog to free blogging sites and set up affiliated links. For example you write a blog about cosmetics and links will be placed on your blog to purchase cosmetics, once a purchase has been made you will earn a percentage of the sale !!

4. Selling On Ebay

I have been selling products on ebay for 5 years from old junk to my own ebay shop. You can purchase products from wholesalers or use a drop shipping service ( they post the products to your customers for you). Try checking Ebay’s completed listed items to see what are the best selling products.

5. Set up Your Own Affiliated Website

Starting up your own website is easier than most people think. You will need to buy a domain name (www.domain.co.uk) and buy some web hosting I recommend 123 reg domains start as little as 99p !! Register your website at affiliate programs (free) try Affiliate Window. You basically are selling other peoples products and all you have to is advertise the product and once a sale has been generated through your website you will earn a percentage of the sale !!

6. Cashback Websites

You can also earn money through cashback websites, remember you do actually need to purchase a product to earn money !!. Many cashback websites will pay you to sign up to free offers etc.. For example: Sign up to love-film and earn £10 cancel your free trial after 30 days and you have just earned £10 to watch a few free DVDs !!

7. Earn Money Gambling With Caution Bingo _ Loopholes

I sign to free bingo websites that offer £15 free no deposit required. I would however recommend this money making idea with caution ! If you have a gambling problem please avoid ! Once you have gambled your free money and won some cash, you will need to make a deposit of your own money to withdraw your winnings, Please remember to not gamble with your own deposit, the deposit is needed to withdraw your winning only !

8. Earn Money Social Networking – Making Friends

Once of my favourite website for this is Toluna they pay your for answering polls, surveys and communicating with its other members.  You can create you own opinion topic ‘ what is everybody having for tea tonight’ and once you have 21 replies you get paid !! It works on a points system you will need 80,000 points to cash out. I find it a fun way to make new friends and I earn money for doing so !!

9. Data Entry – Freelance Work

If you have a skill in a particular field for example you are good at data entry, companies will pay you to do this work for them instead of them having to employ a person. You will need to create a profile at People Per Hour and bid for work.

10. Earn Money Driving Your Car

You can earn money from your car, companies will pay you to have an advert placed on your car. The earning potential ranges from £100- £1,000 Per month not bad for driving around.

1. Set Up A Blog

Blogging for an income is one of the best ways to start your own online business. It requires minimal start up costs and the work involved is fun and rewarding.

There are several ways to start a money earning blog online. You could use wordpress or eblogger to host your blog for you, or alternatively you can set up your own blog under your own domain name.

Registering your own domain name for your blog will give you more freedom to actively promote your blog and ultimately make you more money !!

It would cost you a few pounds to set up your domain and host(123reg start as little as 99p), and the benefits far outweigh the costs involved.

What Shall I Blog About?

Once you have everything in place and you are ready to start blogging. So what do you blog about ?…………………….People blog about anything and everything the world is literally your oyster. People blog about their life experiences, their jobs and careers, their cars and their cats !! To the children they have raised to the dinner they ate.

As long as you are passionate and enjoy writing you will find your blog will grow with you. And in turn so will your income.

How Do I Make Money From My Blog?

You will need to monetize your blog or link related affiliated products or services.

Google Adsense is probably the most well known method – you can join the program for free and display ads on your blog. You will then be paid when a lead or a sales has been generated through your blog.

There are also a handful of websites which give you the opportunity to get paid for each blog post you make on a specific subject. Pay Per Post and Review Me are two such examples, and they will pay you a certain amount of money to review a product or website for the owner.

Now your blog is up and running you need it to be seen by as many people as possible.

One great way to do this is to submit your blog to as many of the social bookmarking sites as possible. Also trying posting in forums related to your blog with your link in your signature.

Your done. Good luck and happy blogging !
